Is It Time to Call a Roofing Contractor?

When considering if you need roof repairs or a roof replacement, there are various factors, both large and small, that will help you decide if you need to contact a roofing company.  Below are some of the times when you should contact a company to take a look at your roof:

1.) Your Roof is Old

There are different “life spans” for roofs depending on the material being used. Asphalt roofs are considered old if they’re older than 15 years, whereas metal or tile roofs last slightly longer. If your roof is older than 15 years old, it is recommended to have someone come to your home and see if your roof should be replaced.

2.) Your Shingles are Raised and Lifted

Because your roof is exposed to different elements, temperatures, and conditions, it’s completely normal for your shingles to slightly lift and curl from the roof. However, if you notice that they’re severely lifted or there are many that aren’t laid flat to the roof, it would be a good time to consider repairing those spots.

3.) Discolored Walls or Ceilings/Leaks

If you notice water damage or discoloration in your ceilings or walls, waiting to get a roof replacement may cause structural damage to your home and create larger problems beyond a roof replacement.

4.) Animals

Having unwanted animals in your home may be caused by a rotted section or a small hole in your roof. Small animals will find those parts of roofs and crawl in, creating a new place to stay warm. Make sure you contact a roofing company if you notice animals in your home.

5.) Exposed Nails

Having a single nail or a few nails that are exposed aren’t going to cause for an entire roof replacement, however if you notice there are a lot of exposed nails, getting a roof replacement is important to consider because leakage can stem from the exposure of nails.

6.) Hail Damage

After your home is exposed to hail, getting someone to look at your roof and the status of it is important. If a hailstone hits an asphalt shingle, it can tear or create a hole in the shingle. However, it usually just grazes it and takes off granules from the shingle. When the shingles no longer have that granule layer of protection, the sun and UV rays will slowly destroy the area around the missing granules. More granules around the initial spot will come off and create a wider area for damage. There will be spots and “bruises” that may not be obvious at first glance, but can become serious if not taken care of.

7.) Flashing

Flashing is installed around the valleys of your roof, your chimney, and many other essential places. Meaning if you notice damage, it’s important to have someone fix your roof before further damage is done.

8.) Overlaying

“Overlaying” is a method where material is simply installed over your old roof for temporary fixes. If there have been any repairs to your roof where overlaying may have been used, it would be a good idea to contact a roofing company to come out and make sure no further damage has been done underneath the surface.
